The Secret to Making Your Signs Stand Out

How to Create Weathered, High-End Signs That Sell

Have you ever looked at a handmade sign and thought, Wow, that looks like it came straight from a high-end boutique! …but then, when you try to recreate it, something just feels off?

Girl, I’ve been there! There’s an art (and a little science) to making signs that have that weathered, high-end look that customers LOVE. But don’t worry, I’m breaking it all down for you today.

1. Master the Art of Layering & Overlays

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make? Flat, one-dimensional signs. If you want to make your signs stand out (literally), you need to embrace layering.

Overlaying stencils adds depth and contrast
Mixing fonts & design elements creates a custom look
Blending colors & distressing edges gives that loved & lived-in feel

Try using reusable stencils instead of vinyl—this allows you to create multiple layers without having to constantly recut new designs. (And, let’s be real, who has time for that?! 🙃)

Want to see this in action? I’ll be walking through these techniques during Paint Week!

2. Mixed Media is a Game-Changer

If you’re just painting straight onto wood and calling it a day, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to add texture & dimension to your signs.

💡 Try these ideas:
✔ Use fabric, paper, or scrapbook elements for extra texture
✔ Add raised lettering or embellishments for a 3D effect
✔ Layer multiple paint techniques like crackle & dry brushing

Mixed media isn’t just fun—it also adds serious value to your pieces, making them look more custom and high-end.

Inside Paint Week, I’ll show you exactly how to bring your signs to life using mixed media techniques!

3. The Right SVG & Stencils Make All the Difference

Not all designs are created equal. Choosing the right SVGs & stencil styles is the secret sauce to making professional-looking signs.

Look for trending designs that customers are actually searching for
Use designs that fit your brand (Farmhouse? Whimsical? Modern?)
Think beyond signs—use SVGs on t-shirts, mugs, tumblers, and more!

The right designs sell themselves—I’ve seen some of my members turn one SVG into a best-seller just by using the right colors & techniques!
